About Us

NAMI Northern Virginia is the Northern Virginia local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. We serve the Northern Virginian counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, and Falls Church.

NAMI Northern Virginia offers classes, support groups, and other services to individuals living with mental health conditions and their families and friends at no cost to participants. We also provide public presentations to raise awareness and educate within our community.
Founded in 1977 as Pathways to Independence, we joined the newly formed "National Alliance on Mental Illness" in 1979 and thereafter changed our name to NAMI Northern Virginia.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI provides education, support, and advocacy to imporve the lives of those living with mental illness, as well as their families and friends, mental health professionals, and all who share NAMI's vision and mission. The nonprofit organization was founded in 1979, and now has more than 210,000 members and 1,200 affiliate groups across the U.S. It was named one of the "top 100 charities most likely to change the world" (Worth Magazine).

The NAMI Northern Virginia chapter is one of a number of affiliates of both the NAMI Virginia and NAMI National organizations in the Washington, DC Area.
