NAMI Peer-to-Peer
NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a free 12-hour, 8-session educational program for adults living with a mental health condition. Taught by NAMI-trained volunteers who have lived experience with a mental health condition, this class includes activities, discussion, and informative videos. However, as with all NAMI programs, it does not include recommendations for treatment approaches. NAMI Family-to-Family NAMI Family-to-Family is a free 20-hour, 8-session educational program for family members, partners, and friends of individuals living with a mental health condition. It is a designated evidence-based program. This means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition. NAMI Connection Support Group NAMI Northern Virginia offers Peer Support Groups for adults (age 18+) living with mental health conditions. Our support groups are free and no registration is required for you to attend. These peer support groups provide a safe, judgement free, and confidential environment for attendees to share their stories, learn from one another, and offer and receive support from others with similar lived experiences. NAMI Family Support Group NAMI Northern Virginia offers Family Support Groups for family members and loved ones (age 18+) who are impacted by mental illness. Our support groups are free and no registration is required for you to attend. These family support groups provide a safe, judgement free, and confidential environment for attendees to meet with, learn from, and share with other family members, partners, and friends seeking support, education, and additional resources. NAMI In Our Own Voice (IOOV) NAMI In Our Own Voice changes attitudes, assumptions, and ideas about people with mental health conditions. These free 40, 60, or 90-minute presentations provide a personal perspective of mental health conditions, as leaders with lived experience talk openly about what it's like to have a mental health condition. NAMI Provider Education NAMI Provider Education introduces mental health professionals to the unique perspectives of individuals living with mental health condition and their families. You’ll develop enhanced empathy for their daily challenges and recognize the importance of including them in all aspects of the treatment process. |
Teens & Young Adults |
NAMI Peer-to-Peer for Young Adults
NAMI Young Adult Peer-to-Peer is a free 10-session educational program for adults living with a mental health condition who are looking to better understand their condition and journey toward recovery. NAMI Young Adult Peer-to-Peer targets a younger audience than NAMI Peer-to-Peer (ages 18-36). Taught by NAMI-trained volunteers who have lived experience with a mental health condition, this class includes activities, discussion, and informative videos. NAMI Ending the Silence (ETS) NAMI Ending the Silence is a free 50-minute mental health education program designed to complement health, science, or psychology classes. Ending the Silence features individuals and family members whose lives have been affected by mental illness, who visit high schools and other locations to provide their perspectives based on their lived experience with mental health. Youth Leadership Council Youth Leadership Council are age 15-23 and care about elevating the voices of youth and young adults on mental health. The Council meets monthly and participates in volunteer training events and advocacy; share their stories on youth presenter panels; and represent NAMI Northern Virginia at community events. The Youth Leadership Council also works with NAMI Northern Virginia to plan fun social networking events and other opportunities for local youth and young adults. |
Parents & Caregivers |
NAMI Basics
NAMI Basics is a free 6-session educational program for parents, caregivers, and other family who provide care for youth (ages 22 and younger) who are experiencing mental health symptoms. The program is free to participants, 99% of whom say they would recommend the program to others. NAMI Basics is available both in-person and online through NAMI Basics OnDemand. Family Support Partner Services Family Support Partners are trained parents and caregivers who use their personal experiences to help other youth and families build on their strengths, navigate services, develop supports and find hope. Family Support Partners understand first-hand the challenges families may experience because they have navigated mental health /substance use systems with their own child. Children's Challenging Behaviors Children's Challenging Behaviors is a six-hour workshop for parents of children and youth with mental health needs. In this workshop, a trained and experienced parent provides information to help parents understand typical behaviors versus challenging behaviors that require intervention. Parents learn when and how to seek help, develop parenting strategies, learn the ins and outs of special education and other educational supports, and discover community resources available to families and youth. |
Community |
Monthly Meetings
Each month we meet for a workshop, guest speaker, open house, or other activity related to mental health. The Monthly Meeting is open to the public and is a great way to meet others who share similar experiences. The Iris Project The Iris Project helps spread hope and awareness to people living with a mental health condition, family members and our community. Volunteers distribute silk irises for a small suggested donation. Free information about mental health and our local programs is also available. Proceeds help fund NAMI Northern Virginia’s programs of education, support, advocacy—and HOPE! |
