schizophrenia and related disorders Opportunity to participate in a research study related to
The Clinical Research Coordinator at the Boston VA Research Institute has offered the opportunity for families to participate in a study related to schizophrenia and related disorders. The study is designed to help determine the genetic variables responsible for these conditions. Once found, this information can be used to help improve methods for managing symptoms and to hopefully one day find a cure.
They are seeking families with at least 3 members who are diagnosed with one of these disorders:
• schizophrenia
• schizoaffective disorder
• schizotypal personality disorder
• bipolar disorder with psychotic features
Family members can come from multiple generations, including siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. They must live in the U.S., be over 18 years old and be willing to participate in the study.
While the research team is based at the VA Medical Center in Brockton, Massachusetts, family members do not have to be veterans or live in Massachusetts. Most of our study participants are non-veterans and they work with families from all over the U.S.
The study itself simply consists of a clinical interview (about 2 hours long) and donating a blood sample. One of our research assistants meets with the family member right in his or her home, or at a nearby place that is safe and convenient, to conduct the interview. We also make arrangements for obtaining the blood sample at a local lab. Once completed, participants receive a check for $130.00.
